After a doubling in the suicide rate of young men in England, the first sustained fall in number of suicides in this group, since the rate started rising in the 1970's has been recorded, according to the Department of Health.
The National Service Framework for Mental Health - Five Years On is an update report on the Government's ten year plan to improve mental health services in England.
It shows that between 1969 and 2003, the highest rate of suicide in men aged 20 to 34 was in the year 2000 - a rate of 24 per 100,000. However, since then, the suicide rate for this group has started to fall for the first time since 1969.
The lowest suice for 20 to 34 year old men was in 1969 - approximately 11 per 100,000 suicides were recorded.
